The Solace of Dreams

In an unimaginably distant future we will surely still dream, and our dreams will be both our desires and our experiences of that world reshaped by our dreaming imagination. But will there be new possibilities open to us? Will we have new options, perhaps to record our dreams, to preserve them in some tangible form as images or even as objects? Will our dreams come to co-occupy the world of our waking reality? Perhaps we will be able to hook up with other dreamers and share what we are dreaming. But is this what we would wish for? Dreams as well are ‘a fine and private place’, and we might prefer to keep them as such. Then, as now, most dreams will burn up in the incendiary fires of re-entry into our everyday reality, and we might continue to wish it so. The solace of dreams might be that they remain in their own reality, and their reality is not ours.

The Guardian

We might in some distant age meet at last those who watch over us, who in silence attend faithfully to our earthly welfare. Even in our present life we at times sense the presence of this caring guardian other. It is usual to think of this guardian as a separate being, a spirit, an angelic presence. But the mystery schools of Antiquity already knew that this guardian is in reality our daemon - our own higher self. And when in time we meet our faithful guardian, it will not be so much a meeting, as it will be a reunion with our true selves.

New Rituals for a New World

We think of myths as belonging to a distant past, but the far future can provide its own fertile ground for the world of myth. It is six thousand years into the future. DNA and electron sequencing from the realm of science combine with occult and other symbols in an imagined future in which these two worlds merge to become indistinguishable from each other. In this future as distant from our own as our time is from the very beginnings of civilization in Sumer, perhaps humans may themselves appear as creatures of myth: future Valkyries, harpies and sphinxes against which unknown heroes will pit themselves in planet-spanning dramas: new rituals for a new world which will have become unrecognizable to us.
